Bay City, Mich. - The Arthur Hill Lumberjacks third-quarter offensive showcase helped gash the Freeland Falcons 53-47 to win the district title and advance to square off with Saginaw High in the regional semifinals.
Freeland in the last 4:30 of the first quarter, went on a 9-2 run, up four after the first eight minutes. In the second quarter, Arthur Hill was four points better to create a 23-23 tie at halftime.
Lumberjacks senior Lyna Brooks Jr. had six of his team's 10 first-quarter points and finished the first half with 10 overall. Brooks Jr. hit a three, and-1 and a slam. Falcons sophomore Tristan Comer posted nine, with a dunk of his own.
Arthur Hill started to pull away with an excellent third-quarter start. They went on a 12-3 run in the first four minutes, with dunks from Brooks Jr., sophomore Di'onquavis "Boop" Hardy, and junior Tyler Dorsey. The Lumberjacks led by 11, entering the fourth.
The big guys, Dorsey and Comer battled all night, with Dorsey fouling out with 5:08 remaining. The Falcons could not take advantage from there, with Comer exiting the game with five fouls in the next minute.
The deficit shrunk to seven with 4:14 in the fourth quarter, and Freeland sophomore Wilson Huckeby hit one of his five threes on the night. The margin would stay more than seven until the final minute.
A Lumberjacks turnover up eight led to an inbound play and a Huckeby three to make it a five-point difference with 20 seconds left.
Dequavion Terry of Arthur Hill was brought to the free throw line with 14 seconds and missed both shots. On the other end, a Huckeby straightaway fade-away three was off the mark and boarded by the Lumberjacks.
