Dow Chargers Wins 12th District Title, Sixth Consecutive

Midland, Mich. - The Dow Chargers took care of business at Herb's House beating the spirited Bay City Western Warriors by 30, 52-22. 


Dow has won six district titles in a row and seven in 10 seasons with head coach Kyle Theisen. 


Dow 52, Bay City Western 22 - District Final

After Western senior Brooke Swartz hit the game's first shot to make it 3-0, Dow responded with 12 straight points. Chargers junior Dalton DeBoer went 2-2 at the FT line and delivered a three, dropping five of her team-high 14 points in the first eight minutes.


Senior leader Lauren VanSumeren tallied five including a three in the second quarter, and totaled eight at halftime. VanSumeren and sophomore Melanie Kolnitys tightly defended Swartz throughout the game.


The Warriors leading scorer had six of her team's 13, but a 16-7 Dow run in the second quarter gave them a 30-13 halftime lead.


Western recorded six of the first eight points in the second half, with junior Alexis Schlatter accounting for four. The rest of the game went 20-3 in favor of the Dow Chargers, 15 in the fourth quarter.


Chargers senior Klaire Caldwell sustained a season-ending knee injury in practice on Monday. She started the game, was subbed out to a thunderous ovation, and was embraced by her teammates and Brooke Swartz.

Dow takes on Traverse City Central on Monday at Cadillac High School in the regional semifinal. Game time is 5:30 p.m. The Chargers defeated the Trojans 69-50 on February 20th.
