Bay City, Mich. - The top two seeds in Division Two District 38, the Freeland Falcons and Arthur Hill Lumberjacks, were victorious on Wednesday night. Arthur Hill outlasted the Essexville Garber Dukes 54-43, and Freeland flattened the John Glenn Bobcats 58-39 on their home floor.
The Lumberjacks had just two points through the first four minutes; the first quarter ended with them up 10-9. Senior Jaquavis Gipson knocked down two threes.
18-6 was the advantage for Arthur Hill in the second quarter, creating a 13-point halftime lead.
The Dukes would not go down without a fight, pulling the deficit to single-digits in the final 90 seconds. Lyna Brooks Jr. went 4-for-6 from the FT line in the final minute to help the Lumberjacks move to the next round.
For Garber, senior Breandan Newsham netted 16 points, two threes in the second half, and four overall in his final high school game.
After missing his first two threes, Freeland's Wilson Huckeby hit a hot streak, splashing three from beyond the arc in the first quarter. The sophomore had 13 of the Falcons, 19 points establishing an 11-point advantage.
The second quarter was tightly contested defensively, with Freeland scoring eight and John Glenn with five. The Bobcats did not hit a shot from the field in the first five minutes of the second quarter. Junior Sean Wesolek hit the lone bucket, finishing with five in the half and nine overall.
The Falcons, up 11 at the half, began the third quarter with a 7-0 run. Twice, sophomore Tristan Comer assisted a Daniel Duley layup. Comer contributed nine in the second half and totaled 14.
For John Glenn, senior Trevor Hartman scored in every quarter, including a successful four-point play in the final minute. Hartman had 15 points on the night.
